DOG POPULATION CONTROL IN SERBIA

Presence of abandoned animals in public areas represents one of the most abundant and important problems that local communities in Serbia face. Different economic, environmental, health and safety problems are linked to abandoned animals in urban and rural areas. Their existence is the result of the irresponsible ownership but also of the ineffectiveness of the local and national institutions when it comes to systematic solutions of this problem.

Having in mind there is a clear need of the national and local institutions for support in the process of establishing the system of dog population control in Serbia, ORCA has started the project “Building the system of dog population control in Serbia”, in cooperation with World Animal Protection. The aim of the project is to collect all relevant information needed for development of the comprehensive long-term plan for dog population control in Serbia.

Main project activities:

1. Comprehensive research of the current state in area of dog population control on the local and national level in Serbia: (1) policies, legislation and practice on national and local level; (2) compensations paid by local self-governments to citizens injured by dogs; (3) media reports and manners of reporting about abandoned animals and solving the problems of abandoned animals; (4) abandoned animals and public health; (5) animal abuse and public safety.

2. Identification, informing and active participation of important stakeholders in area of dog population management on national and local levels;

3. Development of the “road map” for establishing the system of dog population control in Serbia.

Collected information will serve as basis for development of the necessary National Strategy of dog population control in Serbia which should support local municipalities in their efforts to solve long-term problems of the so far ineffective dog population control.
