FOR PEOPLE AND DOGS: MODEL OF DOG POPULATION CONTROL FOR SAFE AND HUMANE LOCAL COMMUNITY

Presence of abandoned animals in public areas represents one of the most abundant and important problems that local communities in Serbia face. Together with World Animal Protection, ORCA has worked on collecting all relevant information necessary for development of the comprehensive and long-term dog population control action plan in Serbia. 

Recognising that even basic information in this area is missing ORCA has conducted a comprehensive national research of the current state in area of dog population control in Serbia aiming to ensure an evidence base for the development of the “road map” for establishing the humane and effective system of dog population control in Serbia. In addition, during 2016. ORCA has developed first model of humane and effective dog population control for municipalities in Serbia “FOR PEOPLE AND DOGS”and implemented it in municipality of Bogatic. We have conducted a research of the dog population control at local level and supported the municipality to develop a first research-based local dog population control programme. Our aim for 2017 and 2018 is to continue to build on our previous results and ensure wide support to creation of the National strategy of dog population control in Serbia and the implementation of the ORCA model “FOR PEOPLE AND DOGS”. The project is funded by the World Animal Protection. 

Main project activities:

1. Creation and distribution of promotional material related to ORCA model “FOR PEOPLE AND DOGS” to local municipalities;

2. Organisation of media seminar with an aim to raise awareness of media on the topic of animal abandonement and dog population control;

3. Creation of a website which will serve as a platform for national and local institutions to learn about ORCA model “FOR PEOPLE AND DOGS”;

4. Organisation of workshops for kids as well as art and literary competion in order to learn about dog care, dog bite prevention, abandoned animals and responsible ownership;

5. Organisation of the first national conference on dog population control in Serbia.
